Eat Pray Love

It was the 47th consecutive night and she was lying on the bathroom floor, crying. Elizabeth Gilbert was going through a bad phase of her marriage where all she wanted was independence. While suffering from bad depression and finishing up the tough divorce agreement process, her heart took refuge in another lover, David. As it’s said, ‘out of the frying pan, into the fire’, this relationship too turned out to be obnoxious and included phases of love and ignorance alternatively. The turn of events broke her from the inside and she decided to take a full year holiday to get back up. Depression never really went away.

This book, Eat, Pray, Love is about her journey of searching and loving herself back. Based on her true experiences, she has structured her 1-year journey into Italy, India and Indonesia, all three starting with ‘I’, truly a synonym of self-discovery , into 36 tales of each country, 108 being a spiritual number!

ITALY

The journey in Italy is all about eating. She enjoys the delicacies of Italy and travels throughout to taste various cuisines. She makes friends and a crush as well. The struggle with her depression and fights with her mind for peace never actually leaves her alone. By the end of her Italy visit, she has already gained a lot of weight.

INDIA

She finds refuge from her inner monster in an Ashram in Mumbai to learn devotion from her Guru. The ashram has rules including necessary meditation under the cave at 4 am followed by Gurugita mantra chanting and then the breakfast. She struggles badly with the meditation as her demons stop her from concentrating but she tries hard to overpower her mind from remembering old episodes of struggle with marriage and failed love-affair with David but it is only with non-stop practice that she achieves a high state of concentration wherein she gets to control her mind. She falls in love with the environment and calls herself ‘Ante-vasin’, i.e, one who lives at the border. The spiritual journey of India allows her to conquer her mind and achieve the kundalini shakti.

INDONESIA

She visits a medicine man in Bali and learns his techniques to stay happy. Next, she spends time with a lot of people and gets to know the Balinese culture and their balance while also experiencing hardships in events like fundraising for a mother and her children’s home. Her journey in Bali ends with her falling in love with a Brazilian man; truly a fairy-tale ending.

The journey of self-discovery is a must-read for all the enthusiasts who are trying to find themselves. The way of writing is simple and extremely connecting with the reader with good use of humour in between. Elizabeth Gilbert is a brave woman who fought her battles alone. Sometimes it is required. So proceed with an open mind. Anger may act as a catalyst towards some solution to a life's problem. It acts as motivation. We think anger is wrong whereas it is of 2 types: C onstructive and D estructive. Do we really need anger? Short answers: In career, yes. In relationship, maybe not. We need some kind of anger with problems to find solutions. Otherwise you must have heard about 'chalta hai' attitude in India. Compromise and adjustment: these doesn't need anger. Change

C hanges are good. It teaches you something new. But the catch is: you may not like it. In fact, it's not easy. It needs rewiring of brain cells that further requires personal effort.  Wouldn't it be better if we keep growing? Picture of the month: A few days back I left my home and went on a journey to an unknown destination. Took a train, reached a village and the rest is one of a memorable experience. It sounds naive, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do and it has no explanation. (Do it cautiously though). Personal Rambling: It kind of makes me sad to say that this is the final newsletter. I am so grateful to you for sticking with me and watching me go crazy with words and photos and whatnot. This small initiative was my way of expressing myself and talking/writing to people. Your replies and thoughts and support meant the world to me. Thank you ♡ I have grown in this while and changed as a person for the good—still a work in progress but more disciplined than b...
